Born and raised on the American River in Sacramento, California, author Wendy Voorsanger holds a fanatical enthusiasm for California history which led her on a quest to discover women’s contributions in building the West. The result is the blog—She is California—which chronicles pioneering women who helped build California and her debut historical novel, Prospects of a Woman.
Wendy started her career in the Silicon Valley writing about technology trends and innovations for newspapers, magazines, and Fortune 100 companies. She earned a B.A. from California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo, an MFA from the Vermont College of Fine Arts, and attended Hedgebrook, the Squaw Valley Writers Workshop, and Lit Camp. Wendy has worked as a lifeguard, ski instructor, and radio disc jockey. Currently, she's a member of the Castro Writers' Cooperative, the Lit Camp Advisory Board, and the San Mateo Public Library Literary Society.
Her debut historical novel—Prospects of a Woman (She Writes Press, Oct 2020)—features pioneering California women An excerpt won 1st place in the California Writer's Club short story contest and is published in the Fault Zone Shift Anthology. Two-time Governor General's award-winning author Douglas Glover says, "Prospects of a Woman is a fascinating, complex, dark, and beautiful novel of women and sexuality on the frontier of the California gold strike days."
